Meet Heidi My name is Heidi Johnson. Why do I homeschool? Lots of reasons! I like being able to choose what I feel my children should learn, rather than having to follow the same curriculum as everyone else. I also like encouraging my children to be independent learners. We have an eclectic style, which means we draw from a variety of resources and use whatever seems best suited to our needs. I like Montessori and Charlotte Mason, and I prefer materials that encourage a self-teaching mode in my children. I appreciate support and encouragement from other homeschoolers, because you know what? I'm not perfect. I don't have it all together, and I don't always know what I'm doing. Recognizing that other homeschoolers have problems sometimes too, and being able to learn from them about how they've solved those problems, is a great encouragement to me. I try to pass on that encouragement to others by sharing what I've learned over my years of homeschooling. One way I do this is by writing about my homeschooling experiences and sharing resources and ideas that I've discovered along the way. |

Heidi's first homeschooling e-book, "Internet Resources for HomeSchooling", is an incredible collection of--you guessed it--internet resources for homeschooling! And the best part is that all the resources she has reviewed are free. Be sure to check it out.
Her latest homeschooling e-book is in response to the question, "How Do I HomeSchool Kindergarten?" It's easy, when you're brand new to the idea of homeschooling, to feel a little overwhelmed about the whole affair. It's also easy to go overboard. The best part about this book, though, is that Heidi's timeless wisdom and ideas apply not only to the kindergarten level. If you know of someone who is starting to homeschool--at any level--be sure to tell them about this book. You might even want a dose of her common sense approach yourself, no matter where you are in your homeschooling journey. |

Meet the Group That Supports Heidi Mine is a small group of friends. I used to be involved with a more organized group and do classes with them, but as the kids have gotten older, we've just needed more time at home to accomplish our goals. See, my children have a number of outside activities and that really takes up all the time we have for away-from-home, school-related activities. I have to be honest. When I was part of a homeschool group, I found that I was always comparing myself and what we were doing with others and what they were doing. I found myself being pulled in several directions. What I really needed to be doing was praying for guidance about what worked in our specific family. Don't get me wrong; we enjoyed the trips and the classes and the people. It's just that once you've done the trips, you probably don't need to do them again. Things change as children grow. When I get together with my homeschool friends, we catch up on how things are going, share problems and solutions, just connect with each other. I'm happy with things the way they are. You might find that a small, core group of friends works for you, too, and that's okay. |
