Starting a Diaper Service

from the Introduction:

"Welcome to the world of the diaper service operator (DSO)!...

...You are entering a world that can be both satisfying and fulfilling...

Brand new parents are experiencing some of the most intense emotions in the world, and they want nothing more than to know they are doing the very best for their babies that they possibly can.  When you help them to do this, they will love you for it.

It is important, however, for you to realize that the world of diaper service operation is a world of work...

...Are you still ready to plunge ahead?

Good!  Then let’s get started."

from Work Area in How to Start

"You need a workspace from which you can sort, stack, count, bag, and store diapers for deliveries. You will want tables that are at a comfortable working height for you. You can buy tables specifically meant for the laundry business, but they are expensive. We found that basic eight foot fold-up tables worked well, as long as they were sturdy. Unless you are very tall or very short, this type of table should work just fine. Sometimes you can work at a table while sitting on a barstool to give your feet a rest. Rubber mats on the floor will also help your feet tremendously.

You will also need a space from which you can count your dirty diapers, unless you launder each customer’s diapers separately. You should be sure to clean this workspace well after each use. If you use the same space for clean diaper sorting, you will want to make sure that you have sterilized the space before putting clean diapers on it.

The amount of actual workspace you’ll need depends on how you decide to sort your diapers for your customers. If you simply stack up all the newborn size, count out the right number, and bag them up for each customer, your work space can be smaller. This will also be the case if you wash each customer’s diapers in a separate net bag. But, if you decide to try marking diaper sets, your workspace will expand dramatically because you must sort all the diapers into sets before you can bag any of them up."
